Fort Mountain State Park in Georgia is a beautiful and serene setting for a peaceful escape from the stresses of everyday life. Fort Mountain State Park is situated in the Chattahoochee National Forest giving visitors to the area an almost endless amount of land to explore and providing numerous outdoor recreational pursuits. Hiking, fishing, camping, swimming, and game courts are just some of the recreations available at Fort Mountain State Park.
Fort Mountain State Park takes its name from an odd structure that is located on the mountain. A stone wall runs for a few hundred yards at the top of the mountain. Perched along the mountains natural cliffs, no one is certain who built the walls or why they were built. Theories run from the wall being built as a defense structure or as a religious one. In any case, it was a lot of work for someone and is interesting to see the wall in this unlikely location and to speculate about its purpose.
Fort Mountain State Park’s campground offers 70 camping sites located in two campgrounds that will accommodate both tent and RV campers. The camping sites are located in a forested area with specific sites ranging from shaded to more open. A few walk-in sites specifically for tent campers are another choice in the campground. The sites are not particularly large nor are they particularly private, but the sites are nice and quite attractive. Each site offers water, picnic tables, lantern post and most offer electricity. Shower facilities, flush toilets, a dump station and laundry facilitates are offered to campers as well. Be prepared when coming to Fort Mountain to camp as it is along trip to get supplies that you may have forgotten.
Fort Mountain State Park offers playgrounds and game courts to visitors. A small lake in the park is the setting for a place to fish, swim, and sunbath on the beach. Small boats can be rented at the lake as well. Numerous opportunities for fishing and other recreational pursuits are available in the region near Fort Mountain. Hiking is another popular activity at Fort Mountain State Park. From short and easy trails to longer more strenuous hikes, Fort Mountain’s trails offer something for every level. Some trails are open for mountain biking, check with the park staff for more details. A trail leads to an old lookout tower that provides a great view on clear days.
Fort Mountain State Park is located along State Route 52 (to the east of Interstate 75) in northern Georgia, just south of the state’s border with Tennessee.
