After the long wintery spell, most of us can’t wait to be out. Delaware provides plenty of options for outdoors enthusiasts; my favorite being visiting the Nemours Mansion and Gardens.

What is Nemours Mansion and Gardens all about?
Nemours is the 300-acre country estate of the late industrialist and philanthropist Alfred I. duPont. In 2008, the Nemours Mansion and Gardens completed a $39,000,000 restoration and till date it remains as the grandest buildings ever constructed in Delaware.
The English Gates welcome you to the opulent 47000 sq.ft. mansion reminiscent of a French château. The inside of the mansion still possesses the distinct feel of the time and century it was built.
Each area showcases the stateliness and the personal touch of the owners. From the splendor of the dining room, the fine china, paintings, chandeliers, a plush library to massive staircases and “a Louis XVI compound musical clock, crafted around 1785 by David Roentgen and Peter Kinzing. The clock plays four different tunes on a dulcimer and pipe organ on three interchangeable cylinders.”

The grandeur and the beauty of the place surpass any expectation. Cruise through elegant fountains, pools, urns, statuary, an intricate boxwood garden, colonnades, a maze and a sunken garden and not to forget the reflecting pool. When the 157 jets in the 40-foot diameter ring are turned off, the one-acre pool can reflect the whole area.
Enjoy the view of the elevated garden from the steps of the mansion. The spectacular statue Achievement, designed by French artist Henri Crenier embellishes the garden’s center.
Another breathtaking piece of architecture is the colonnade, designed by Thomas Hastings and built in 1926 as a memorial to Pierre Samuel duPont de Nemours and his son, Eleuthère Irénee duPont.
Enjoy the majestic and the classic styled Temple of Love at the farthest western point from the mansion.
