As everyone should know by now, Watchmen is not the average comic book story. It has superheros that are closer to villains than anything else, graphic violence, and a less than happy ending. Superhero tales don’t often have sex scenes, either. But Watchmen has more than its share of sex scenes – consensual or otherwise. One Watchmen sex scene in particular has inspired reactions that are all over the place, just like the movie itself.
One of the main relationships in Watchmen is the one between mild, somewhat sexually deficient Night Owl II, played by Patrick Wilson, and lone super heroine Silk Spectre II, played by Malin Akerman. Filling out the Watchmen love triangle is the blue, actual super powered Dr. Manhattan, played by a blue Billy Crudup.
The main sex scene in Watchmen finally has Night Owl and Silk Spectre get together in the “Owl Ship.” This sex scene is somehow scored to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” as if to play the sex scene for a laugh.
Comic book movies usually stay PG-13 rated, so there’s no time for anything to get hot and heavy. But Watchmen is no ordinary comic book story, and revels in being extreme in just about everything. This includes sex, which is hot and heavy by comic book standards.
The sex scene is one of the more talked about in the Watchmen movie, though not in completely positive ways. Many call the sex scene goofy, while others got enjoyment out of it. But a few even put the sex scene on a par with Showgirls – which is not good since Showgirls is legendary high camp, in sex scenes and otherwise.
This sex scene isn’t the only bit of nudity or sexual intrigue in Watchmen. As many known, Dr. Manhattan’s blue penis is prominently on display for many of his scenes. Another sex scene is more like a rape, committed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Comedian against Carla Gugino’s Silk Spectre I.
The mere fact that this sort of material can be in a superhero story helped make Watchmen the novel such a hit. But in Watchmen the movie, sex scenes and other graphic material have had more of a mixed reaction among critics, and possibly among audiences.
But for those who were worried about The Dark Knight being inappropriate for younger audiences, with its sadism and darkness, they would have an apocalyptic fit if those young audiences somehow snuck in to see the R-rated Watchmen.
