Tonight’s What Not to Wear makeover recipient was Kimberly, a 30-year-old mom of 2-year-old triplets. Not only is Kimberly a mom, but she’s also a teacher working on her PhD and a spokeswoman for the March of Dimes. Stacy and Clinton aren’t surprised to find out that Kimberly doesn’t have time to breathe, let alone think about her wardrobe. Kimberly’s husband and friends, however, are hoping What Not to Wear can help this working mom find a workable style again.
What Not to Wear: Overwhelmed by Fashion?
Kimberly falls into a common category on What Not to Wear: Last on the List of Priorities. Kimberly knows her wardrobe needs help, but she prefers to focus all of her energy elsewhere. “I feel passion for my children, for my work, but I don’t have a passion for fashion,” she says. Clinton astutely tells her “It’s not about a passion for fashion, it’s about a passion for you.” Kimberly doesn’t need to know all the latest trends or read fashion magazines every day; she just needs to care about herself and her appearance. Stacy and Clinton also point out that she needs to be a role model for her daughters.
Kimberly says frequently that she doesn’t know how to put outfits together or deal with shopping. Faced with all the choices in a clothing store, she gets overwhelmed and doesn’t know where to start. Clinton suggests that she begin shopping with one single goal in mind and focus only on finding that one great pair of pants, for example. This is great advice for anyone watching What Not to Wear. It definitely helps avoid impulse shopping. Figure out what you need ahead of time, and don’t look at anything that isn’t on the list!
What Not to Wear: Sweaters in Atlanta?
Not only does What Not to Wear makeover recipient Kimberly have a terrible, over-sized, unflattering wardrobe, but it doesn’t even suit her home’s climate. Residing in warm and sunny Atlanta, Kimberly strangely has a closet full of bulky turtleneck sweaters. Stacy and Clinton are stunned as they clutch several hangers in each hand, holding up shapeless sweaters in a rainbow of colors.
Kimberly considers these items work wear or “date night” outfits, while the What Not to Wear home audience is thinking “clean out the garage” outfit or “give to charity”. Stacy remarks that Kimberly’s long red sweater with banding across the widest part of her hips (worn over a plain white t-shirt!) makes her look like a “Christmas troll”. Paired with too-short peg-leg pants and masculine shoes, this troll outfit is the exact opposite of sexy.
When questioned about the sexy factor, Kimberly confesses that whenever she’s tried sexy, it’s turned out slutty. This has always been one of the oddest trends I’ve seen on What Not to Wear–many of the makeover recipients that have the most boring, baggy, over-sized hide-my-figure wardrobes also somehow dress to go out in too-tight, too-short, inappropriate evening wear. Perhaps they feel more confident with the cover of darkness?
What Not to Wear: Uneven Proportions
Like many other What Not to Wear guests, Kimberly is drawn to long clothing that goes down past her hips, thinking it “hides” all of her figure flaws. With narrow shoulders, a smaller upper body and larger hips and thighs, these slouchy-shouldered tunics are actually the worst thing for her. The volume of the garment collects at her hips and simply further accentuates what she’s trying to cover up. Stacy and Clinton let Kimberly know that blouses that hit right at the hip or a little above will be much more flattering to her figure, and that structured jackets will help create stronger shoulders and highlight her narrow waist.
On the first day of shopping, Kimberly does her best to follow the What Not to Wear rules, but is still continually drawn to the same too-long shirts. She tries on a long, flowing maxi dress that makes her look like she’s wearing a tent, and pairs it with a droopy-shouldered cardigan–both of which she labels “sexy”.
While the blouses were items that Stacy and Clinton normally would have told the What Not to Wear makeover recipient to take back, it seems they are exercising leniency to keep Kimberly feeling positive about her shopping trips. After having such an aversion to going to stores and selecting clothing, when Kimberly finally finds items she’s really happy with, it seems they are reluctant to criticize her for them.
What Not to Wear: Creating Multiple Outfits Out of Separates
In a startling What Not to Wear segment, Stacy and Clinton take pieces that Kimberly picked out on day one and try to show her how to make several outfits out of those pieces. The concept is sound, dressing down print blouses with walking shorts and a casual jacket, or dressing them up with a skirt and heels and/or a tailored suit jacket. Unfortunately, nothing they show seems to fit Kimberly well at all. The tops are still too long and too big on top, the jackets are too large and droopy looking with the cuffs hanging over her knuckles, and the shorts and skirts are all too tight.
Kimberly seems excited, but the What Not to Wear home audience is hoping a tailor will be called in.
What Not to Wear: The Bob Haircut Works
Kimberly tells What Not to Wear stylist Nick Arrojo that her very long, straight hair has been cut twice before to send to Locks of Love. (Please, all viewers who are considering donating to this organization, do some research before you do! Check out these very informative pages, for instance, about Locks of Love requirements and startling statistics about how little of that hair actually gets to those who need it.)
All we What Not to Wear viewers know what will happen next: Kimberly gets a bob haircut. Kimberly also proves that this is not always a bad thing. Nick leaves her hair a bit longer in the back, and gives her a heavy fringe of bangs. He also darkens her hair with a semi-permanent color. The result is striking, giving Kimberly a more youthful and playful appearance.
What Not to Wear: Easy Makeup for a Busy Mom, Teacher, and Student
Kimberly lets What Not to Wear makeup artist Carmindy know that she never wears make-up. Like shopping, Kimberly seems overwhelmed by the mysteries of make-up, particularly applying eyeliner. Carmindy wisely creates a simple process for her, with foundation, eyeliner, cream blush, and lip balm. Carmindy shows her how to apply eyeliner by simply making small dashes right into the lash line.
Kimberly looks fresh-faced and attractive, and relieved that it all seems so easy. Carmindy also gives her a nighttime look with a smoky gray eyeshadow, a coat of mascara, and sparkly pink lip gloss. It takes it up a notch in sexiness, without being too overdone for Kimberly’s simple tastes.
What Not to Wear: The Troll Transformed
We What Not to Wear viewers are relieved when we see Kimberly’s final reveal to Stacy and Clinton. Her three looks, which include jackets and walking shorts and a flirty red dress, all fit her very well. It looks as though they found proper sizes, or got the items hemmed and tailored. The jackets perfectly eliminate that slope-shouldered look, and the tops reach to her hips and minimize the heavier curve of her thighs.
Kimberly looks great in long, flowing neutral colored trousers that will be perfect for work or charity events. The summary of her What Not to Wear haul lets us know that she’s gotten 25 mix-and-match outfits for her $5000, including purses and shoes.
Kimberly has been a great What Not to Wear makeover recipient, diving in from the beginning and embracing all that Stacy and Clinton had lined up for her. It’s been great to see her fears over clothing shopping subside, replaced with excitement and happiness over her new wardrobe. Her husband Frank is just as happy, kissing Kimberly warmly and letting her know how beautiful he finds her. Kimberly’s friends and coworkers are also thrilled with the transformation, and she even gets a cheer from her students when she returns to class.
Kimberly now has a wardrobe to match the very full and exciting life she’s created for herself, and What Not to Wear has helped her find a few moments for herself on that great big to-do list.
