Many people fear a collapse of the American economy and a return of an economic depression. While their fears may be a bit overblown, it is always good to be prepared to take care of yourself and your family. This article in no way provides an exhaustive list of things that a person or family will need, but rather some general ideas to get you thinking about what you and your family will need.
Items needed to survive are food, water, and shelter so you should begin your economic depression stockpile survival kit with these three. We will look at these three individually, but first a few words on money and personal defense.
Perhaps the greatest threat to the American economy is hyperinflation. With all the spending going on in Washington it seems that a lessening of the value of the American currency is inevitable. Whether or not this lessening will trigger hyperinflation in 2009 or later is a matter of conjecture at this point though many are convinced. Given this I would certainly stockpile some small bills but also have denominations of gold, silver and other valuables on hand. Pre 1964 American silver coins are readily available and are of a known silver content. The use of gold and silver in an economy with an inflated currency might be beneficial to those who have it on hand. As far as personal defense, desperate people will do desperate things. You should be able to defend yourself. This does not mean to go out and buy and gun if you don’t know how to use it. Get some lessons on gun safety. The economic collapse could happen quickly, but probably not overnight.
Providing shelter in an economic depression for you and your family in an economic collapse should not be difficult as you already have a place to live (right?). You will however need to be able to defend the shelter and to heat it. Few places in the United States get so hot as to cause a threat to life, but a freezing shelter is almost useless. Even a few candles can significantly warm a room.
Providing food for your family in an economic depression should not be too hard if you have a yard. Vegetables such as potatoes, cucumbers, corn, and green beans are easy to grow. Learn to grow your own food now to be able to grow food when it is needed. Seeds can be stockpiled in great numbers in a very small space. Agricultural plots of any size will also draw deer and other sources of meat. You’ll also need to be able to defend your food in desperate economic times. If you don’t have a yard, stockpile high calorie canned foods and all the money that you can lay your hands on.
Obtaining water in an economic depression should not be a problem either. There may be a problem with the safety of the water. Iodine tablets can be stockpiled to purify water and water can be boiled to purify as well.
Always remember that the single most important item to stockpile in any economy is knowledge. Knowing what to do is more valuable than all of the material possession you can hoard away.
Whether or not the economy sinks into a depression or collapse in 2009 or the future, being ready to provide for you and your family no matter what comes can provide peace of mind. With that peace of mind you will be able to do what is most needed in a down economy: work productively and profitably.
