There’s no doubt that Adam Lambert is very talented. Kris Allen is also extremely talented. We know they would not be in the top contenders spot if both did not possess musical talent as well as charisma. But who should win?
American Idol is about more than just talent, as Kara, Randy, Simon and Paula keep telling everybody. It’s about artistic arrangements, stage presence and connection with the audience. Both Adam and Kris have succeeded in all three areas, obviously, and are now challenging for the top spot or becoming the next American Idol.
I, like everyone else, have an opinion about who should win. After watching the show from the auditions forward, I have watched both Adam and Kris evolve into entertainers. Granted, Adam came in with obvious stage experience. He takes the stage and performs like a seasoned performer. But is he a true rocker? He dresses the part, but I sometimes feel that the audience is getting an imitation of a rock and roll musician. Adam’s screaming high notes which he sometimes holds for an extremely long time makes good show, but I fail to see any true edge to his voice like the true hard rockers of the past.
Kris Allen, on the other hand, is a musician. He plays instruments, seems to have a connection to the song, and performs in a more subdued but easy listening style. And although I do not pretend to be a connoisseur of pop music today, I remember rock and roll music very well. It would seem to me that the listening audience today is more slanted in his direction.
If the criteria for American Idol is to present to the musical world an entertainer, which is the better choice? I sometimes listen to both musicians with my eyes closed to determine which performer is making a true impression on me. By doing this, advantage always goes to Kris Allen. Although Adam Lambert is entertaining and never dull, his music seems to mimic the original performers.
Adam Lambert could have a brilliant future in stage productions. He has a strong and dynamic voice which would make any composer proud.
Kris Allen falls right in line with today’s musical audience. I could easily see people filling auditoriums to listen to his music. And also, I believe Kris Allen’s music would get much more air play on the radio than Adam Lambert. Without the visual appeal of Adam’s stage presence, his music lacks that unique quality that many like.
Of course, American Idol, as stated before, is about much more than the music. It’s about fan base and popularity. Therefore, the most important factor will be who votes on this last intense competition. If nothing else, it will be interesting.
