2009 marked the 12th year anniversary for Final Fantasy VII. The Playstation game is easily the most popular Japanese role-playing title ever created and was often credited with the explosion of the genre in the west. Despite years of ongoing rumors, Square Enix has no plan at remaking the legendary game any time soon. In fact, they are current having their hands full with Dragon Quest IX, Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. While Square Enix may not be able to remake the game, Sony may be able to lend a hand (and monetary assistance). Here are five reasons why Sony should help Square Enix remake Final Fantasy VII.
Revitalizing the Genre
Japanese role-playing games are a dying breed in the home console market, especially on the Playstation 3. With games getting more expensive to make, publishers and developers can’t take risky projects that will only sell to a niche market. A remake of Final Fantasy VII could give a kick start to Japanese role-playing games, just like the original did back in 1997.
A remake of Final Fantasy VII wouldn’t need a big advertisement budget. This is because the game is still popular today even 12 years after its original release. Not to mention that Square Enix is continually milking the game with the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, a combination of games and movies revolving around the classic title. Needless to say, a remake of Final Fantasy VII will greatly boost Playstation 3 sales.
Big Budget History
Sony has a history at creating big budget games, from God of War to Killzone 2. While not all of their big spending resulted in profitability, it does show that Sony is willing to commit to and stand behind their big titles. So while a high-definition Final Fantasy VII will no doubt be expensive, Sony would be comfortable with it.
Knowledge of the Playstation 3 Hardware
The Playstation 3 is a tough video game system to develop for due to its complex architecture. No other company know this better than Square Enix as they still haven’t released a Playstation 3 yet in spite of announcing Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII years ago.
However, no one knows the Playstation 3 hardware more than Sony. Due to their technology sharing program between the internal studios, Sony has produce some of the best-looking games this generation with Killzone 2, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Wipeout HD. With the biggest development core in the industry, Sony can lend more than a few hands to help Square Enix develop a remake for Final Fantasy VII.
Playstation 3 Exclusive
The Playstation 3 is currently last in sales compared to the Nintendo Wii and Xbox 360. A devastation blow was dealt in Sony’s catch up attempt by Microsoft when they announced that Final Fantasy XIII will also be released on the Xbox 360. Sony can retake the momentum by making the Final Fantasy VII remake an exclusive title for the Playstation 3. The best way to do so is to help Square Enix financially and in development.
