The Zodiac killer has never been found, though people like Arthur Leigh Allen are at the top of the suspects list. But the Zodiac killer has a new name other than Allen under suspicion, at least for a few days. A woman has claimed that she is the daughter and accomplice to the real Zodiac killer, Guy Ward Hendrickson. Zodiac afficionados will be puzzling over their decades-long clues and signs to see if this matches up, though they are likely doubtful, if the woman’s press conference was an indication.
Deborah Perez called a press conference yesterday to announce her alleged role in the Zodiac killings, and her dad’s guilt. Perez said that Guy Ward Hendrickson was not only the Zodiac killer, but that he had help from Perez herself.
During the Zodiac’s reign of terror and murder in San Francisco almost 40 years ago, five people were confirmed victims, dozens more were suspected as Zodiac victims, letter taunted police and newspapers, and no one ever came close to actually unmasking Zodiac. Perez tried to unmask him herself, but a crowd of Zodiac followers and experts didn’t get much out of her during her press conference.
Perez said she suspected her father after watching an Americas Most Wanted episode on the Zodiac killer. She alleges that Guy Ward Hendrickson, Perez’s adopted father, killed one victim while she was waiting in a car, and that she herself sent some of the killer’s infamous cryptic letters.
Hendrickson died in 1983 and suffered bouts of mental illness, according to Perez. He has not been named as a prime Zodiac suspect before, though many names have.
The late Arthur Leigh Allen, a convicted pedophile, has been the prime suspect since Robert Graysmith’s famed book on the case in the 1980’s. Graysmith, a San Francisco Chronicle cartoonist who was present when Zodiac sent his famed letters to the paper, told the New York Times that he was “doubtful” Perez was telling the truth.
The Zodiac case and the failure to find the killer was also chronicled in the 2007 film Zodiac, which also supported Graysmith’s theory about Allen’s guilt.
No DNA or fingerprints were presented by Perez, but she plans to get forensic tests to prove her claim that she has the glasses of the Zodiac’s last official victim, cab driver Paul Stine.
